It takes a village!
A recent collaboration between Paragould Primary special needs and the Oak Grove Middle School East class is helping visually impaired students communicate with others.
The 3D symbols will be used to help children who have limited speech and/or have visual impairments communicate with other people. Each symbol contains a printed word, a unique raised element which represents the word, and braille to make the individual word.
Misty Powell, speech pathologist at Paragould Primary, asked the Middle School East Lab for help in creating 3D symbols to represent 36 core vocabulary words. Powell said she got the idea to use the 3D symbols from a workshop, and a colleague recommended she reach out to the EAST lab.
Aaron Ferguson, EAST teacher, said the sixth graders learned a lot about software programs as well as organization, teamwork, and time management.
“Just being able to learn how to use a 3d printer is a big gain for a student in the 6th grade and boosts their confidence,” East teacher said. “The attention we received from the kids to want to help other kids made us so proud and happy to have this project be completed.”
The East students said they enjoyed creating the Braille helpers. They copied and pasted the words onto a disk drive that then were printed on a 3D printer. The project took about one week, with students able to print two words an hour. “We translated words such as: Go, Who, Up, Down, etc.,” the sixth grade class said, adding “Big thanks to Misty Powell for allowing East students to help little Rams.” And the Primary is so thankful for EAST making this project a reality!
